In preparation for your baby's arrival, sign up to take a class designed to prepare you to approach labor, delivery, and early parenting with confidence and support. You will find all of the details for the classes offered at Alaska Regional Hospital on this page.

Online Childbirth Class

Our new online childbirth class is the perfect alternative for busy parents needing a flexible class schedule or for moms on bed rest. Have you given birth before? This online class is a great refresher course!

The eight-chapter program is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos, personal birth stories, animations, activities, and games to teach all the essential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth.

Our online childbirth class will help you:

  • Understand pregnancy – what’s happening to your body, discomforts, warning signs, nutrition, exercise, and more
  • Learn about labor – preparing for birth, pre-labor signs, onset of labor, 3D animation of labor process, and more
  • See how the stages of labor unfold – watch amazing real-life birth stories
  • Discover helpful comfort techniques – breathing, relaxation, massage, visualization, focal points, hydrotherapy, labor and pushing positions, advice for partners , and more

Childbirth Education Class 

  • Class Fee: $70 per couple
  • Held at Alaska Regional Hospital
  • Pre-registration is required
  • Dates in 2015: February 22, March 28, April 26 | 1 - 5 p.m.

This one-day session includes instruction on labor coping and comfort skills, the role of the labor partner, relaxation and breathing using the Lamaze method, and how to plan for delivery. You will also become familiar with general terminology, pain medications and epidurals used during labor, and variations in labor such as preterm, postdate, fast and slow labor, back labor and cesarean sections.


Breastfeeding Class

  • Class Fee: $25 per person/couple
  • Held at Alaska Regional Hospital
  • Pre-registration is required
  • Dates in 2015: February 24, April 7 | 6 - 9 p.m.

The art of breastfeeding is the focus of this class. An open discussion about common concerns is led by a board-certified registered lactation consultant who also teaches you about positioning and latch-on skills for effective milk transfer to the baby. Partners are encouraged to attend.


Baby Care & Safety Class

  • Class Fee: $25 per person/couple
  • Held at Alaska Regional Hospital
  • Pre-registration is required
  • Dates in 2015: February 25, March 25, April 22 | 6 - 9 p.m.

Burping, bathing, bonding—these are just a few of the baby care basics that are presented to help get ready to bring baby home. Topics focus on feeding and diapering, preparing you and your home, choosing a car seat, learning to calm a baby and newborn screening tests.
